Orpheum Theatre Celebrates 95 Years of Entertainment in Phoenix

The Orpheum Theatre Phoenix turned 95 on January 5th. The historic theatre has remained a mainstay of downtown Phoenix for nearly a century, and as the decades passed Orpheum Theatre was reimagined to remain a pillar of the performing arts community.

With a new digital cinema package designed for the ultimate movie-going experience, Orpheum Theatre continues to support varied shows—from comedy to ballet performances to movie premieres to concerts.

History of the Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre holds a significant place in the history of Phoenix. Opened on January 5, 1929, it was the last major construction project in Phoenix before the onset of the Great Depression and was the pride of the City. With 1,800 seats and an early form of air conditioning, it was the only theatre between Los Angeles and Denver able to handle the traveling vaudeville shows that rotated weekly.

Originally known as the Paramount Theatre, it was a hub of entertainment, showcasing the latest films, live stage performances, and musical acts. The theatre’s opulent design, inspired by the Spanish Baroque style, was a testament to the grandeur and elegance of the era.

Walking into the Orpheum Theatre is like stepping back in time. The architectural design is a perfect blend of elegance and grandeur. The exterior features intricate detailing, with ornate terra cotta embellishments and a majestic marquee that lights up the night sky. Inside, the theatre boasts a breathtaking auditorium with a lavish proscenium arch, adorned with gilded moldings and intricate carvings. The ceiling is a masterpiece in itself, with its hand-painted frescoes depicting scenes from Greek mythology.

The theatre was designed by architects Lescher & Mahoney and built for $750,000 by Jo E. Rickards and Harry Nace.

Renovations and preservation efforts

Over the years, the Orpheum Theatre has undergone several renovations to preserve its historic charm while ensuring modern amenities for its patrons. In 1988, voters approved $7 million for the restoration of the theatre. The following year, the Orpheum Theatre Foundation was established to raise the remaining funds. In 1991, the theatre’s original name, Orpheum, was restored after several name changes over the years. The renovation process involved meticulous attention to detail, with experts working tirelessly to recreate the original color schemes, restore the ornate plasterwork, and revive the stunning murals.

The Orpheum Theatre as a cultural landmark

Beyond its architectural significance, the Orpheum Theatre holds a special place in the hearts of the Phoenix community. In 1984, the City of Phoenix acquired the block containing Orpheum Theatre as a site for its new 20-story city hall and that very next year, the theatre was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Countless iconic performances have graced its stage, from Broadway shows to renowned musicians and comedians. The theatre’s ability to adapt to changing times and cater to diverse audiences has allowed it to remain a beloved institution throughout the years.

Events and performances at the Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre is a hub of artistic expression, hosting a wide range of events and performances throughout the year. From Broadway productions to symphony orchestras, ballet performances to stand-up comedy shows, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The calendar is always filled with an exciting lineup of world-class talent, ensuring that patrons have the opportunity to experience the magic of live performances in a truly enchanting setting.

Orpheum Theatre’s impact on the local community

The Orpheum Theatre’s impact extends beyond the stage and into the local community. It serves as an educational resource, offering workshops, masterclasses, and outreach programs to inspire the next generation of artists. The theatre also partners with local schools and organizations to provide access to the arts for underserved communities. By fostering creativity and cultural enrichment, the Orpheum Theatre plays a vital role in shaping the future of Phoenix.

“I am proud that our team gets to play a role in the rich history of the Orpheum Theatre,” said Jerry Harper, acting director of the Phoenix Convention Center & Venues. “Maintaining the storied architectural and structural elements is as crucial to us as remembering the early days of the theatre and how it has changed over time. We are thrilled to celebrate 95 years of the Orpheum Theatre and look forward to many more.”

Today, the theatre still inspires and entertains audiences, offering a glimpse into the past while also looking to the future. Friends of the Orpheum Theatre, the nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of the theatre, is celebrating this historic milestone with “Arizona Unzipped,” a production showcasing the essence of the Roaring Twenties and beyond.
