Suspected Impaired Driver Crashes Into Phoenix House, Killing Man Sleeping Inside

Phoenix police have arrested a man they suspect was under the influence after he drove into a Phoenix home early Wednesday killing a man inside as he slept.

Officers were called to a house around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning near 31st Drive and Southern Avenue where they found Jose Martinez Aguirre, 66, trapped under a vehicle inside his home.

The Phoenix Fire Department had to extricate Martinez Aguirre from underneath. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead from the injuries sustained.

Reports state that Martinez Aguirre was asleep alone downstairs while the rest of his family in the home were upstairs.

Aaron Johns

The driver, 38-year-old Aaron Johns apparently lost control of his vehicle while driving east on Wayland Drive and crashed into the home. Johns remained at the scene. Police believe impairment is a factor in the collision.

Johns has been booked into Maricopa County Jail on one count of manslaughter.
