SmileDirectClub Shuts Down, Leaving Customers Without Further Treatment

SmileDirectClub, the telehealth dental alignment service provider, has closed its doors.

SmileDirectClub announced Friday afternoon that it will cease operations globally, effective immediately. They expressed their gratitude to their customers, however, their aligner treatment service through their telehealth platform is no longer available.

In 2014, the start-up was established with a promise to bring on more than 2,000 employees by 2024. They publicized their teeth aligners as a cost-effective and more efficient alternative to braces.

In September, CNN reported that the company had filed for protection under Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

What are the consequences for current customers?

The big impact that their customers face is that SmileDirectClub will no longer provide any customer service, they have closed their customer service division.

Customers will also no longer receive alignment treatment.

SmileDirectClub has recommended on its website that anyone enrolled in the program should get advice from their dental practitioner.

As per the terms of the SmilePay program, customers are obligated to make all their monthly payments until the balance is paid in full.

SmileDirectClub did note that if a customer should need to request a refund, more details will be offered once the insolvency proceedings have established what measures customers will have to take moving forward.
