Extension of Light Rail System to Northwest Phoenix Set to Launch Next Month

Valley Metro has revealed that the light rail transit expansion in northwest Phoenix will soon start operations.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the launch of the project is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024. Officials have reported that the 1.6-mile extension runs from 19th and Dunlap avenues and north to 25th Avenue, then to the Metrocenter district, which is currently undergoing a transformation.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego stated the need for trustworthy, economical transportation options need to be increased as the city grows. She explained that the objective is for everyone to be able to access the places they need to go without having to depend on a car. The Northwest Extension II will be named Thelda Williams Transit Center after the long time serving Phoenix City Council woman and Mayor who had a great impact on the city of Phoenix and who recently passed away.

The extension comes with an elevated rail station, a bridge that passes over Interstate 17, seven art pieces, and over 200 trees that have been planted along the path. Additionally, a four-story parking garage is now located at Metrocenter, providing improved parking and ride options to those using the transit system.

Officials have reported that since 2008, the system has managed to draw in over $17 billion. It is anticipated that there will be an additional $2.1 billion in both residential and commercial expansion in the near future. Click here to learn more about the program.
