Disney Continues to Capture Audiences with New Jungle Book Movie

The new Jungle Book movie takes the original and makes it so much better.  Aside from the better graphics, more nuanced story, and simple message, the new movie makes a strong connection between humanity and nature. I saw the movie with my eight-year-old niece and I felt like I was eight again, seeing the movie for the first time.

The movie stays true to the roots of the original and the book itself, but it adds a dimension that draws the viewer in so much more. Even though much of it is done with CGI, the depth of the backgrounds, animals, and effects draw you in so you feel like you are a part of that world. That is the beauty of the movie – it makes you feel as if you are living the experience with the characters.  It is as if you are learning the lessons right along with Mowgli.

In all ways, this quietly majestic film should be considered a triumph. The familiar, beautiful story of a young boy raised by animals but having to re-join man has been re-imagined as a funny, scary, affecting family adventure with a mythic feel.  Even though it was made with the most modern technology, its ethical values and storytelling is that of an old Hollywood classic. The movie feels as though it has always existed, but we are only now just discovering it, which is a beautiful feeling.

Based on the reaction of my niece, I think this movie is one for the ages. It is a Disney classic, as Walt Disney would have created if he were alive today. It captures the imagination while tugging at our heartstrings. It teaches lessons through intertwining them with the story and not being overtly obnoxious about it. It takes you on a journey of self-discovery and reflection in a way only a great movie can. It does this so well that when I walked out, I felt like that eight-year-old kid who wanted to change the world.
