Goodyear, Buckeye Among Fastest Growing U.S. Cities

Goodyear and Buckeye were among the nation’s fastest-growing cities in the most recent population estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Goodyear, with 79,003 residents, ranked No. 14 in population growth as of July 1, 2015 from the previous year. 

Buckeye was No. 15 in population growth with 62,138 residents. 


Both cities grew 4.3 percent year-over-year.

Georgetown, Texas, saw its population rise 7.8 percent, making it the nation’s fastest-growing city with a population of 50,000 or more, 

New York remained the nation’s most populous city with 8.5 million people followed by Los Angeles with  3.9 million. 

Phoenix checked in as the sixth largest city with 1.563 million people, up 1.6 percent. That is just  behind No. 5 Philadelphia, which has 1.567 million people. 

Tucson, Arizona’s second largest city, ranked at No. 33 with 531,641, an increase of 0.2 percent. 

Arizona’s other large cities reported growth:

— Mesa, ranked as the 38th largest U.S. city, just ahead of Atlanta, has a population of 471,825, up 1.4 percent.

— Chandler, No. 76, grew to 260,828, an increase of 2.5 percent.

— Gilbert, No. 85, has 247,542 residents, up 3.4 percent.

— Glendale, No. 89, grew to 240,126 residents, a 1.1 percent increase.  
 

— Scottsdale, No. 92, was up 2.6 percent to 236,839.

To produce population estimates for cities and towns, the Census Bureau first generates county population estimates using a component of population change method, which updates the latest census population using data on births, deaths, and domestic and international migration.
