2 Men Injured as Chandler Officer Mistakes Neighbor for Armed Suspect in Shooting

Officials from the Chandler Police Department released new information on a shooting involving an officer that occurred near the Chandler Fashion Square mall over the weekend. According to reports, two individuals were hospitalized as a result of the incident.

On Sunday night, a shooting occurred on Carla Vista Drive, close to the intersection of Chandler Boulevard and McClintock Drive. The police received several 911 calls reporting a man, who was later identified as 59-year-old Luciano Gutierrez, behaving erratically and mentioning “dead bodies” at his residence.

Upon arrival, the officers created a boundary around Gutierrez’s residence. They then proceeded to communicate with him through a security screen door, as one officer reported that he appeared agitated and was carrying a handgun. During this interaction, a neighboring individual entered the boundary and was advised to leave for their own safety, yet they refused.

According to reports, Gutierrez left the residence and aimed his firearm at one or multiple officers a short time later. In response, two officers shot back and hit Gutierrez. Shortly after, a third officer encountered a man who fit the description of the armed suspect and appeared to be pointing a weapon at the officer. The third officer fired one shot, which hit a nearby area, according to the police.

As of Tuesday morning, both men were admitted to the hospital and their condition has been reported as stable.

Following his release from the hospital, Gutierrez will face several felony charges for aggravated assault on an officer. The police are currently investigating the involvement of another individual, a 39-year-old resident of Chandler who remains unnamed, and are considering recommending charges against him.
