Tucson Priest Accused of Having Sex With Minor

A priest with Salpoint Catholic and the Diocese of Tucson has been “removed from public ministry” and fired following accusations of sexual misconduct with a minor.

Salpointe Catholic confirmed Fr. Edgar Lopez is being investigated for allegedly having sex with a minor in another state more than a decade ago.

“The alleged abuse is not in any way related to Salpointe Catholic High School or Fr. Lopez’s ministry within the Diocese of Tucson,” Salpointe Catholic said in a statement.

The school also confirmed the investigation is ongoing and law enforcement was notified here in Tucson and at the scene of the alleged abuse.

“Salpointe Catholic High School, the Carmelite Order, and the Diocese of Tucson are committed to the prevention of sexual misconduct with minors and to responding to such allegations,” the school said. “Salpointe Catholic High School students, parents, and supporters should be aware that we take all allegations very seriously.”

Any victims/survivors of sexual abuse are encouraged to contact Jorge Mora, Survivor Outreach Coordinator for the Carmelite Order. His email address is [email protected] and his number is 630-929-4040.
