Former HGTV Star Headed to Prison After Grand Theft Conviction

Charles “Todd” Hill

Charles “Todd” Hill, a former HGTV celebrity, was given a sentence of four years in prison on Tuesday for participating in real estate and financial fraud. He was also directed to compensate nearly $10 million in restitution.

HGTV’s 2014 series “Flip It to Win It” featured Hill, also known as “Mr. Flip It,” as its star. The show followed Hill as he purchased run-down homes, renovated them, and sold them for a profit.

As per the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, instead of properly utilizing the funds, he utilized millions of dollars for renovations that went over budget, illegally funneled profits, and kept a large sum of money obtained through fraudulent means.

In 2019, Hill faced accusations of committing various fraudulent acts against multiple individuals, some of which took place prior to the events described in the series. Recently, he pleaded guilty to grand theft charges involving 11 victims and acknowledged the inclusion of aggravated white-collar enhancements.

Hill carried out a scam in which he set up a Ponzi scheme, misappropriating an investor’s funds under the guise of purchasing homes, but ultimately using the money for extravagant personal expenses.

To conceal the theft, Hill resorted to creating fraudulent balance sheets and obtaining loans through false information.

An investor, in a separate instance, gave $250,000 for the renovation of a house. However, upon inspecting the property, he discovered that it was merely a charred structure with no progress made on the remodeling.

Hill was found guilty of misappropriating construction funds for his own personal gain in a separate incident.

During the sentencing hearing on Tuesday, the victims expressed that they were still experiencing financial and professional consequences due to the fraud.

Hill was given a prison term of four years, along with a 10-year probation period. Additionally, they were directed to compensate the victims with a restitution amount of $9,402,678.43.
