Self-Checkout Lanes At Walmart May Be A Thing Of The Past

The self-service lanes will be reverse back to checkout lanes manned with Walmart staff.

It is estimated that it will take approximately two weeks for the transition to be completed at this particular store.

Major retailers, such as Walmart, have been reviewing their self-checkout lanes in recent times.

Starting in March, Target locations across the country implemented a restriction on self-checkout lanes, allowing only up to 10 items per transaction. In order to cater to customers with larger purchases, Target announced that they will be increasing the number of traditional checkout lanes with live cashiers.

From a business perspective, self check-out lanes offer significant cost-saving advantages. By reducing the need for additional cashiers, stores can optimize their staffing levels and allocate resources more efficiently. This can result in substantial savings in labor costs, especially during periods of low customer traffic. However, retailers are figuring out that self-checkout lanes facilitate theft as there is no employee involved in the process of scanning the purchased items.

Dollar General recently announced its decision to eliminate self-checkouts from 300 of its stores that have experienced the most shoplifting incidents. However, in some Dollar General stores, self-checkouts will still be available but only for customers with a maximum of five items.
