Former Valley Attorney Convicted of Sexual Assault Sentenced

The office of Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced on Friday that Edward Maldonado was sentenced to six years in prison. As part of his sentencing, Maldonado will be required to register as a lifetime sex offender and be placed on probation for 10 years upon his release from prison.

Three victims spoke to the court about the abuse perpetrated by the defendant. The first of the victims expressed her gratitude to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and said, “My hope now in sharing this statement is that this court and the larger community understand the radius blast of this man’s actions and that it’s everyone’s duty to act in the defense of victims.”

In February, Maldonado was found guilty of one count of sexual assault, a class two felony and one count of sexual abuse, a class five felony, committed on June 27, 2014.

“Justice prevailed today for the victims of a lawyer who took advantage of his position and his stature to sexually abuse and take advantage of women in the legal profession,” said County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “I am very proud of this office for standing up for these victims and helping them find justice. The courage these victims have shown by reporting this abuse and testifying against this assailant is to be commended. Today’s sentencing is the culmination of the hard work of this office to bring justice no matter who the defendant is.”
