Deflategate Hits Valley High School

A high school football coach in Gilbert was caught deflating footballs a during last week’s game.

An assistant coach at the American Leadership Academy in Gilbert has been accused of deflating footballs during Friday night’s game against Gilbert High School.

According to the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), someone witnessed the coach deflating the footballs during the first half of the game. The coach was allegedly ejected from the game, and the team was given a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty during at the time of kickoff during the second half of the game.


The official rules state that footballs must be properly inflated to the National Federation of State High School Associations rules, which is 12½ to 13½ psi.

The AIA has no jurisdiction over issuing infractions to individual staff. It will now be up to the school administration to determine the consequences for assistant coach’s actions.

The American Leadership Academy is reportedly working closely with the AIA to investigate the incident and are involved an internal investigation.
