Cox To Discontinue Webmail, Transitioning Cox.net Users To Yahoo Mail

Cox Communications, one of Arizona’s main provider of both internet and cable television, is soon going to stop supporting its webmail system and will soon be transfering users over to Yahoo Mail.

Cox announced on its website that the shift to Yahoo Mail will provide a superior experience for its customers. Even though the transition is taking place, customers can still use their Cox.net email address, but they will now have to access it through Yahoo rather than Cox.

According to Cox, the majority of its users won’t be impacted by this change since the company stopped providing webmail to new customers as of August 2019.

In the late 1990s, Cox and other companies began providing webmail to draw in clients from dial-up programs like AOL and EarthLink. Yet, with the emergence of free email services like Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, and Gmail, interest in webmail from ISPs has dwindled. Moreover, the cost of maintaining and storing email data has risen, thus making it unfeasible for ISPs to keep supporting such systems.

Cox has not given the public a specific timeline for the switchover to Yahoo Mail, however, the company has assured customers they will be informed in advance of their accounts being transferred.
