Why Some Customers Might Receive a $92 Deposit From Apple

After almost a decade since Apple’s “batterygate” controversy, a group of iPhone users in the United States have finally received compensation through a class action lawsuit settlement.

In 2017, Apple acknowledged altering the performance of older iPhones following the observation of problems by users after specific iOS updates.

According to Apple, the reason behind their action was to prevent the older phones from experiencing shutdowns caused by battery deterioration.

A few years after, a legal action was filed against Apple alleging that they intentionally manipulated the performance of older iPhones without informing the users, in order to encourage them to upgrade their phones earlier.

According to the agreement, Apple has reached a settlement and will pay an amount between $310 million and $500 million, based on the number of claims submitted.

The distribution of compensation has been continuously postponed because of appeals made to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. However, the final case was dismissed on November 5th, and the distribution of payment began on January 6th.

The class action suit’s website states that payments are currently being issued on an ongoing basis and are anticipated to be completed by the end of the month. Initially, it was estimated that these payments would be approximately $60, however, certain users have reported receiving deposits from Apple for a total of $92.17.

In order to receive the payout, individuals were required to submit a claim by October 6, 2020 if they possessed an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, or SE that operated on iOS 10.2.1 or above, or if they had an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus with iOS 11.2 or above. As part of the claim process, users were asked to provide their bank details for the purpose of receiving an electronic payment.
