McDonald’s Bringing Back Their 4-Patty Big Mac

On Tuesday, McDonald’s revealed that their Big Mac with four patties will be making a comeback to their restaurants for a limited period. This comes four years after the fast food chain initially introduced the temporary item on their menu.

The Double Big Mac is set to be offered at select McDonald’s restaurants in the United States beginning on January 24th. The duration of its availability on the menu has not been disclosed by the chain.

The Double Big Mac is identical to a regular Big Mac, except it contains double the amount of beef. It comes on a sesame seed bun and includes American cheese, chopped onions, shredded lettuce, and pickles.

In March 2020, McDonald’s introduced the Double Big Mac, along with a downsized version known as the Little Mac. This smaller option featured a single hamburger patty and lacked the middle bun. However, it seems that the Little Mac will not be included in this recent release, disappointing those looking for a smaller Big Mac option.

The Big Mac was introduced in 1968 and was made available on McDonald’s menus across the country, approximately two decades after the establishment of the restaurant chain. The credit for inventing the first Big Mac goes to Jim Delligatti, who first introduced it at his restaurant in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, a year prior.

According to Michael Delligatti, the son of the late inventor, his father’s legacy will continue through the Big Mac sandwich. Recognizing the demand for a larger burger, he dedicated weeks to perfecting the new burger by testing various buns and creating the renowned Special Sauce. His priority was always satisfying the customer’s desires.

Throughout its history, McDonald’s has introduced several temporary versions of the iconic Big Mac. In 2017, two new options were added to the menu: the Grand Mac and the Mac Jr. The Grand Mac featured two larger patties, totaling one-third of a pound, while the Mac Jr. was reminiscent of the Little Mac with just one patty.

In under a year, McDonald’s has introduced the Double Big Mac, following its decision to revamp its burger offerings. The changes, which include using softer buns, grilling the onions with the patty, and increasing the amount of Secret Sauce, were announced by the company in April 2023.

If you choose to try it, make sure you are hungry. The Double Big Mac contains 770 calories and 38 grams of protein, while a regular Big Mac only has 590 calories.
