Tucson Musician Admits Guilt For Cutting Throat Of Unknown Individual

Michael Moynihan Jr.

In Tucson, a successful musician has admitted their guilt in cutting the throat of a stranger outside a Home Depot in the early part of 2020.

Michael Moynihan Jr. showed up at court on Thursday, Nov. 2, and declared himself guilty except insane for attempting first-degree murder.

Moynihan, aged 35, was sentenced to 10 and a half years of imprisonment in the Arizona State Hospital.

Valerie Cavazos from 13 News has repeatedly covered the Moynihan case during the last month. Her reports can be seen below.

Court records indicate that Moynihan has been found guilty of a felony and also has a long-standing mental illness. It has been documented that the illness he suffers from is “schizoaffective disorder” and that he experiences auditory hallucinations, has delusions of grandeur, and perceives things that are not real.

Moynihan told the authorities that he was pleased upon his apprehension that he had been able to carry out the stabbing, and that he would have attempted to murder someone if he had been released from prison.

Back at his apartment building three years prior, people living there had noted his “unusual behavior, as well as his fear of government agents”.

Later on in the day, Moynihan arrived with a pistol at the Speedway Circle K. It was claimed that he had directed the firearm at personnel and was seen “twirling and singing in the car park.”

He attempted to escape to New York with the weapons, yet he was apprehended.

Moynihan was confined to the mental health unit at Riker’s Island for several months before he was allowed to post bond and reunite with his family in Tucson.

A plea bargain was struck in which four charges of aggravated assault with a weapon were reduced to a singular count.

The court declared that the man should be granted five years of probation and would have to abide by the requirement of taking his prescribed medications while on probation.
