Suspect Charged With Raping A 70-Year-Old Employee At A Phoenix Apartment Complex

Brian Kibiwot Chuchuney

On Sunday, police apprehended a man who is now facing multiple felony charges for allegedly assaulting and  raping a 70-year-old woman who was staffing the front desk of an apartment building near Chase Field in downtown Phoenix.

According to the court documents, Brian Kibiwot Chuchuney, aged 20, knocked on the window of the complex located at 300 S 4th St, Phoenix, AZ 85004 at around 4:30 a.m. The victim, mistaking him to be a resident, let him in and he proceeded to the desk. He inquired about the use of a bathroom and water, to which she replied that there were no public bathrooms. However, she decided to provide him with water, considering she had been previously reprimanded for not letting in another resident.

Police reported that the woman was making her way to get him water when Chuchuney caught up to her, grabbed her from behind and committed a sexual attack. She attempted to defend herself, but he was too strong and overpowered her. Consequently, Chuchuney took her into a storage area nearby and raped her.

The woman’s persistent cries for help eventually forced him to halt his actions, as outlined in court documents. Chuchuney ran off with her pants and underwear, but then discarded them in the vicinity of the building. The police were soon able to apprehend him following a brief pursuit.

During the interrogation, he denied any involvement. He was ultimately charged with three counts of sexual assault, one count of sexual abuse, one count of kidnapping, one count of aggravated assault, two counts of assault and one count of theft. According to the court paperwork, Chuchuney had no address and had been arrested on numerous previous occasions.
