You may continue to smell smoke in the air. Although SRP-MIC reports that the fire at their landfill has been suppressed since early Sunday, the landscaping debris continued to smolder and smoke Tuesday morning.

Due to the prevailing winds, many parts of Scottsdale and Phoenix experienced more smoke than they did when the fire was burning.

Some residents contacted the city with concerns about air quality. Air quality in the valley is monitored by the Maricopa County Air Quality Department through equipment placed around town. However, these monitors are not designed to measure smoke like that being emitted from the landfill fire (more information can be found on the Maricopa County Air Quality Status Map or by contacting the air quality assistance line at 602-506-5102).

Neither Maricopa County nor the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) have issued a public statement or health advisory related to this fire.

Per general ADEQ guidance, people with lung conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD) should stay indoors when experiencing outdoor smoke, and take necessary precautions when outside.

The landfill personnel have assured the city that they are expending all efforts to eliminate the source of the smoke.
