Passport Execution Fee Increases on April 2, 2018

The U.S. Department of State recently announced that the passport execution fee will increase from $25 to $35 to help cover application processing costs. The increase will only apply to applicants using the DS-11 form, such as first-time applicants over 16, children under 16, and applicants who re-apply after reporting their previous passport lost or stolen. First-time adult passport books will cost $145 and first-time child passport books will cost $115.

Although the routine processing time for passports is 4-6 weeks, it is possible to get one as soon as 8 business days with an appointment at a passport agency or center. A typical passport is valid for 10 years, unless it was issued to a person 15 years old or younger, then it’s only valid for 5 years.

Some individuals may be eligible to apply for or renew their passport by mail using Form DS-82 if they meet certain requirements. Otherwise, they must apply in person using form DS-11. Passport services recommends maintaining a valid U.S. passport if you have family living or traveling abroad, are considering an international vacation or have a job that might require traveling outside of the U.S.
