I-17 Temporarily Closed in South Phoenix After a Fatal Crash Involving Pedestrian and Several Cars

Authorities are reporting that a man is dead after being struck by several vehicles on interstate 17 in south Phoenix early Thursday morning.

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety officials, a deadly collision involving a pedestrian caused an overnight closure of the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 along the Durango Curve near the 19th Avenue exit shortly after midnight.

Witnesses reported seeing man moving back and forth against the guardrail on the freeway before running in and out of traffic. The man was struck by multiple cars and was pronounced dead by paramedics who arrived to the scene.


Detectives do not believe any of the cars involved fled the scene. They have reported that all drivers stayed on scene and have been cooperating in the investigation.

Exact details on the identity of the victim and the number of vehicles involved have not been reported.

The investigation is still underway, but the officials were able to reopen the I-17 around 5:30 a.m. this morning.
