General Motors announced this week plans to close a large computer center in Chandler at the end of October, eliminating nearly 1,000 jobs.

The information technology center opened in 2014. GM has several additional centers in Warren, Michigan, near Detroit, suburban Atlanta, and in Austin, Texas, all of which will remain open.

GM said Wednesday that the Arizona center currently employs over 1,000 workers now. The majority of the eliminated jobs revolve around information technology support for consumers, dealers and the company in general. Employees at the other three centers in the United States will consume the workload.

A spokesperson for GM said a small number of employees working on software for vehicles will remain employed in Arizona. The Laid-off workers will be able to apply for other positions within GM, with some being offered severance pay and outplacement services.
