Daughters of MLK and Malcolm X to Speak In Tucson For Juneteenth

The University of Arizona will celebrate the “Beyond Juneteenth” Initiative feature special guest speakers Ilyasah Shabazz and Berenice King.

The daughters of Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. will speak together at the Centennial Hall on Monday, June 19, the Juneteenth holiday. The event will begin at 7 PM. Tickets are free, however attendees need to register to reserve a seat.

Berenice King is the youngest child of Martin Luther King Jr. Ilyasah Shabazz is the third daughter of Malcolm X.


This event is a celebration of “Beyond Juneteenth.” It’s called “Beyond Legacy: The Next Generation of Justice and Action in the 21st Century.”

The discussion will be led by Denise TrimbleSmith, a justice initiatives project director at the UA Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The focus of the speakers will be their fathers’ legacies and their both of their mothers’ fight for justice in America.

Juneteenth is a holiday that honors the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to announce the freedom of enslaved people in Texas.
