Customers Can Now Use Personal Cups for All Starbucks Orders

In both the U.S. and Canada, Starbucks is now allowing patrons to use their own cups for Starbucks purchases be it a mobile order, dine in or at the drive-thru.

Beginning Wednesday, Starbucks is introducing a new policy to cut down on the use of cups in an attempt to become more environmentally conscious.

At participating U.S. and Canada stores, customers who use re-usable mugs will receive a ten-cent reduction on their purchase, plus an extra 25 stars in the U.S. These stars can be cashed in for discounts or free items.

Customers looking to partake must bring in an clean cup. Baristas will not wash or sanitize personal cups and any that are not clean will not be accepted.

When patrons visit the drive-thru, they can let the baristas know that they are bringing their own cup for their beverage. To ensure safety and hygiene, the lidless cup will be taken at the window without contact and the same method will be used to return the drink.

When ordering through the app, customers should click on the “customization” option and select the “personal cup” option. After completing the ordering process, they can bring their clean cup to the pick-up area, where a barista will take it from them and return it to them in a contactless way.

Starbucks announced that they will be utilizing a “custom beverage craft smallware with standardised lines” for baristas to prepare the drinks. They will then move the drink to the cup before adding any toppings.

Several stores were involved in the new concept implementation a reusable cup trial in 200 drive-thru stores throughout Colorado last spring.

In the U.S., Starbucks has become the first national coffeehouse to offer its patrons the possibility to use their own cups when they order drinks of all sizes.

The objective of Starbucks is to cut back on waste by half by the year 2030.
