Arizona Police Officer Arrested For Deadly Hit-and-Run Involving a Pedestrian

On Monday, law enforcement officials announced that a White Mountain Apache police officer was taken into custody over the weekend in relation to a fatal hit-and-run incident.

Josh Anderson is accused of using his White Mountain Apache Police Department patrol vehicle to cause the death of Iris Billy on State Route 73 near Pinetop during the early morning hours of Thursday, according to a statement from the department and fleeing the scene.

The police department reported that the damage to their car was in line with a collision involving a pedestrian.

Last Friday, Anderson was detained by law enforcement at his home in Whiteriver. On the same day, he tendered his resignation from the department. It has been reported that Anderson was on duty when the crash occurred and had also responded to the scene and was the officer to made next-of-kin notifications to Billy’s family.

Anderson was booked into the White Mountain Apache Adult Detention Facility on multiple tribal charges, including assault, aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault causing serious physical injury, criminal negligence, reckless driving, interference with an officer, death caused by a vehicle and leaving the scene of a fatality collision.

Billy’s family described the victim as a mom of two young children who was outgoing and always there for others. They believe Billy was trying to get a ride when she was hit and killed.

Her family has created an online fundraiser to help with expenses.

The FBI has taken over the investigation. No additional information about the crash has been released.
