AG: Woman receiving state aid bought Mercedes, Nissan sports car

A state grand jury has indicted a Chandler woman on 10 felony counts after she allegedly falsified her income to qualify for more than $70,000 in state benefits, according to Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich.

Jennifer Garrett, with an alias of Jennifer Haynie, received state medical benefits while she and her then-husband owned and operated a successful car restoration business, according to investigators.

She also bought a Nissan 350Z sports car and a Mercedes sport-utility vehicle while receiving state benefits, authorities said.

The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System launched an investigation after receiving a tip claiming Garrett was driving a Mercedes and living in a large home while receiving state benefits.

Arizona residents must fall below a certain income to qualify for state Medicaid benefits. AHCCCS investigators said Garrett would not have qualified for state benefits if she had accurately reported her income.

Garrett is now facing 10 felony charges for various fraud charges, theft and six counts of forgery.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Michelle Hogan.
