A woman visiting from Oregon who went missing on a hike in north Phoenix Friday morning was found dead in what officials believe to be heat-related.

The 34-year-old Jessica Christine Lindstrom was last seen in the area of 51st Drive and Deem Hills Parkway when she went hiking around 8:30 a.m. Friday. She was declared missing about nine hours later by Phoenix police.

Authorities, family and friends rallied together on a search for Lindstrom. Phoenix officials sent up drones and technical rescue teams were brought in for the five-hour search.  Lindstrom’s body was found on a remote trail on the north side of the Deem Hills Recreation Area Friday night. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner will officially determine the cause of death, but initial information indicates Lindstrom was overcome by the extreme heat while hiking.

Authorities said Lindstrom, who was a former resident of Peoria, was in town from Oregon visiting family, with plans to baptize her child while in Arizona. She was a registered nurse.

This year as of July 29, Maricopa County reported 39 heat-associated deaths have been confirmed, with an additional 312 deaths under investigation.

The National Weather Service reports that July 2023 was the hottest month in Phoenix on record that included 31 consecutive days over 110 F. The previous record was set in 1974, with was 18 straight days.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning through Monday night. It is recommended to avoid hiking, working out or being out in the elements during the hottest parts of the day.
