In honor of the day, let’s start off with a little history lesson. Who invented the cheeseburger? There are a lot of stories of those claiming initial rights to the creation, but tracing back the origins, it appears the beginning of the cheeseburger dates back to the 1920s.
A story suggests that 16-year-old Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop called The Rite Spot. While he was experimenting with an order, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a hamburger cooking on the grill.
If the thought of a sizzling burger is making you hungry, you are in luck as many restaurants are celebrating the day by offering special deals on cheeseburgers today. Here’s where you can, as they say, find the beef!
Applebee’s
Applebee’s is offering their Classic Cheeseburger, Classic Burger and Classic Bacon Cheeseburger with fries for $8.99. Customers can order in the restaurant, online or on the app.
McDonald’s
McDonald’s is joining in on the celebration of National Cheeseburger Day with double cheeseburgers for only $0.50 when customers order through the McDonald’s App, one burger per person.
Wendy’s
Wendy’s is offering customers a $.01 Jr. bacon cheeseburger with any purchase from Sept. 18-22. To take advantage of the special pricing, check the “Offers” tab in the app or online, then apply the deal to your mobile/web order or use the offer in-restaurant by adding it to your digital rewards card. Customers can scan their phones at the counter or drive-thru.
Burger King
Burger King customers who are members of their Royal Perks program can have it their way and order a free cheeseburger if they make a purchase of $1 or more. The deal is good for all locations across the U.S. on Sept. 18.
Carl’s Jr.
Carl’s Jr., customers will receive half off double cheeseburgers all day on National Cheeseburger Day.
Dairy Queen
Want a cold treat with your cheeseburger? Dairy Queen is serving up a special on their cheeseburger. In honor of National Cheeseburger Day, customers can get a free single Original Cheeseburger with any order of $1 or more. The offer is only available in the Dairy Queen app and limited to one per customer.
White Castle
In honor of the day, White Castle is offering BOGO Single Cheese Sliders, with a limit of one free.
Smashburger
You get a couple of extra days to celebrate National Cheeseburger Day at Smashburger. The chain is offering its Classic Singles for $5 between Sept. 18 and 20. Valid in-store or via the Smashburger website and app (use the code SMASH23), the offer applies to Classic Singles, Classic Single Turkey Burgers and Classic Single Black Bean Burgers.
