Suns move D-League team to Prescott Valley Event Center

The Phoenix Suns have a new home for its Development League team in Prescott Valley.

The Northern Arizona Suns will play in the 5,100-seat Prescott Valley Event Center 90 minutes north of Phoenix.

The Suns bought the Bakersfield Jam for an undisclosed price to move the team closer to Phoenix. The deal was announced April 12.

Phoenix and Bakersfield had a “hybrid” relationship in which the Suns were in charge of basketball operations while the Jam’s ownership group was responsible for operating the business aspects of the team in Bakersfield, Calif.

“We are thrilled to bring professional basketball to the town of Prescott Valley,” Suns President Jason Rowley said. “In addition to the basketball advantages of our D-League affiliate being close to home, (this) announcement creates endless opportunities to strengthen the connection with our fans in northern Arizona.”

The Northern Arizona Suns will play 24 home games from November through April.

The $35 million Event Center opened in 2006. It has hosted minor league hockey, high school tournament basketball and other events.

The arena has faced financial challenges and its owner filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August, according to news reports.
