Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced on Wednesday, the indictment of Lester Paul Richmond, 36, for one count of intentionally subjecting a domestic animal to cruel mistreatment.
In June of this year, Scottsdale Police received a 9-1-1 call regarding a dead puppy left in a neighborhood alley near McKellips and Scottsdale roads. Reports state that the 8 to 10 week old dog’s mouth was duct-tapped shut and had a cord wrapped around its neck.
Upon an investigation, Lester Paul Richmond Richmond and 32-year-old Heather Auditor were named as suspects.
Police looking for Lester Paul Richmond
The investigation uncovered surveillance video where Auditor worked as a cashier of both Auditor and Richmond talking about getting rid of the dog. Police also found video footage of Richmond’s car, in the alley when the puppy was abandoned.
After Richmond was arrested, MCAO sent the case back to Scottsdale for more investigation and Richmond was released. After Scottsdale police resubmitted the case, MCAO moved forward with prosecuting him and an indictment was handed down by a county grand jury. Authorities have not been able to locate Richmond to serve him with a summons.
Under Arizona law, a class five felony is the highest level of punishment for animal abuse a person can face.
“Cruelty to animals is a senseless and heinous crime. My office takes these crimes very seriously. It is important that if anyone has any bit of information on this defendant you contact the Scottsdale Police Department,” said County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.
