Phoenix Officers Fatally Shoot Man Attempting To Steal Cars At Gunpoint

The Phoenix Police Department reported that a male suspect, who tried to steal vehicles at gunpoint, was fatally shot by officers on Monday evening.

The occurrence started at approximately 10:45 p.m. when law enforcement officers observed a car traveling at a high speed in the vicinity of 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street. They made an effort to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to comply.

A man in his late 30s was tracked by a police helicopter as he drove a vehicle to a new location. Upon arrival, the man got out of the vehicle and tried to forcibly take another car using a firearm. However, the intended victim quickly drove away and there were no further altercations.


The individual returned to his initial car and came to a halt close to 60th Lane and McDowell Road. Law enforcement officers approached the vicinity and the individual proceeded to flee towards a different vehicle while holding a gun. In response, the officers discharged their service weapons at the individual.

Emergency responders provided medical assistance at the location, however, the individual was declared deceased upon arrival at a medical facility.

According to authorities, the firearm belonging to the man was found at the location.
