A Phoenix man was apprehended after reportedly stealing an ambulance from the Phoenix Fire Department with paramedics and a patient still in it.
Court papers indicate that the crime occurred in downtown Phoenix at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Law enforcement officials report that 31-year-old Jaysun Tyler Smith absconded with an ambulance parked nearby 2nd Avenue and Jackson Street with one patient and four Phoenix firefighters inside.
According to the documents, Smith was only able to drive a few hundred feet before one of the firefighters pushed him out of the driver’s seat. Subsequently, he ran away, but was apprehended by officers within a few minutes. Once he was restrained with handcuffs, he declined to speak with the officers, and the motive for his actions remains unknown. Consequently, he was taken into custody and charged with kidnapping and theft.
Smith was convicted of armed robbery in 2014 and spent five years in an Arizona prison. Additionally, his criminal record includes shoplifting, disorderly conduct, assaulting officers, and trespassing. Recently, he was imprisoned for 30 days due to a shoplifting arrest in Scottsdale.
Smith is currently detained at the Maricopa County jail and has not posted his $4,500 bond.
