Man Facing Felony Charges After Dog Dies in Hot Car In Glendale

A Goodyear man was taken into custody for leaving his dog in a hot car while he went shopping in Glendale last week, resulting in the death of the dog.

According to legal documents, David Joseph Zupancich, 40, visited the Bass Pro Shops located at Glendale Avenue and 93rd Avenue at around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. He reportedly left his dog inside his car.


It was reported that the window was only slightly open, measuring less than an inch. The man individual did not leave the air conditioning running or provide any provisions such as food or water for the dog.

Reportedly that day it was sunny with temperatures reaching 81 degrees, the car was not parked in a covered area.

It is unknown how long the dog was left in the car under the conditions. Upon Zupancich’s return, he discovered that the dog had passed away.

According to the authorities, Zupancich was dressed as a law enforcement official, wearing a peace officer hat, a detective badge around his neck, and a handcuff pouch containing handcuffs. He was also carrying a firearm in a holster.

Authorities discovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia during a search of his vehicle.

Zupancich was taken into custody and processed at a detention facility for charges relating to animal abuse, impersonating a law enforcement officer, and drug offenses.
