Interstate 10 Closed, Driver Dead, Shelter In Place For Community After Nitric Acid Spills From Truck

Interstate 10 in Tucson remains closed after liquid nitric acid spilled from the tractor truck in a Tuesday afternoon crash.

The crash involving a truck tractor pulling a box trailer occurred around 3 p.m. and as a result closed the I-10 between Rita and Kolb roads

The driver of a truck tractor died in the accident dead and the Interstate 10 in Tucson remains closed after liquid nitric acid spilled.

DPS and Tucson fire and police departments instructed those within half a mile to evacuate the area.

A shelter in place for those living within a mile of the crash ended around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday evening. However at 4:55 a.m Wednesday, the Unified Command reinstated the shelter in place order for a one-mile perimeter around the incident. Unified Command advises anyone within the one-mile perimeter to turn off heaters and/or air conditioning systems that bring in outside air.

While crews were attempting to remove the load from the commercial vehicle, gassing occurred.

Interstate 10 remains closed in both directions between Kolb and Rita roads in Tucson. The public should avoid the area and motorists should seek an alternate route. Unified Command anticipates an extensive closure.

A broad road closure is expected well into Wednesday. Motorists should plan for the closure to impact their morning travels in the area.
