Infant in Kansas City Dies After Mother Accidentally Places Her In Oven For Nap

A baby has tragically passed away after being put down for a nap in an oven by her mother in Kansas City.

The defendant, Mariah Thomas, 26, from Kansas City, has been charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death, and could face between 10 years to life if found guilty.


On Friday afternoon, authorities were called to a report of an unresponsive baby. According to a statement of probable cause, emergency responders discovered the one month old infant with visible burn injuries. Tragically, the child was declared deceased at the location.

Police report the infant sustained thermal injuries on various parts of her body, as she was clothed in a bodysuit and a diaper.

According to the statement, a witness told responders that the mother “accidentally” put the child in the oven instead of the crib while putting the child down for a nap.

No explanation was given in the statement regarding the process of how the mistake was made.

In a statement, Jean Peters Baker, the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney recognized the horrific character of this catastrophe and the heavy burden caused by the passing of this life, while reaffirming they have faith in the criminal justice system to appropriately address this dreadful circumstances.

The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
