Car costs in Arizona below national average

Arizona ranks in the middle of the pack in the annual cost of owning a car, according to a study by a personal banking website.

The three-year cost of owning a car in Arizona was $10,894, a few hundred dollars below the national average of $11,227, said the study by GOBankingRates.com

Arizona was No. 27 out of 51.

The study looked at sales taxes on car purchases, title and registration fees, insurance premiums, fuel and maintenance expenses.

“Typically, car owners should keep their costs low, around 15 percent of their income for the car payment, insurance, gas, and so on, which is trickier in states with higher car costs,” said Elyssa Kirkham, lead reporter on the study.

There’s a $7,216 cost difference between owning a car in Michigan and New Hampshire.

Michigan, the center of the automobile industry, had the highest annual cost at $15,315. New Hampshire was the lowest at $8,098.

California was second at $14,452 and the District of Columbia was third at $13,561.

The survey revealed that New Hampshire, Oregon, Alaska and Montana have no sales tax on car purchases.

The average new car purchase price was $33,543 in August 2015, according to Kelly Blue Book.
