Yuma Union High School District, Yuma Community Food Bank Receive Critical Tools to Address the Opioid Epidemic from RALI

6,000 safe disposal kits will be available June 25th to help keep the community safe

The Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative (RALI) today announced a donation of $5,000 and 6,000 safe disposal kits to help Yuma community families stay safe and healthy while practicing social distancing during the coronavirus crisis.

RALI, an organization dedicated to fighting the opioid epidemic throughout Arizona and across the country, partnered with Yuma Union High School District and Yuma Community Food Bank to bring these important disposal kits to the families in the area. As we continue to fight COVID-19, RALI and local partners are also continuing their fight against the opioid crisis and that starts with the proper disposal of prescription medicines as a critical preventative step.

“This donation of safe disposal kits will help keep Yuma families safe and healthy as we get through this global pandemic together,” said Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema.

“Yuma Community Food Bank is committed to helping fight hunger and misuse of drugs with families in Yuma County,” said Shara Whitehead, President and CEO for the Food Bank.  “This is a perfect partnership with RALI and the High School District to distribute these invaluable drug disposal kits.”

“The state-wide school closure has caused families across Yuma County to adjust on the fly. One of the biggest adjustments has been having children home for several months when they are normally at school. In many cases, school is the safest, most consistent place for those children, and we want to do our part to continue ensuring their safety as best we can,” said Yuma Union High School Associate Superintendent Tim Brienza.  “These kits will be instrumental in helping keep prescription medications out of the hands of our children, and we are happy to help with the distribution effort. It is clear that RALI is similarly aligned with improving the health and well-being of our families and we are grateful for the partnership and care offered to the Yuma community.”

Safe disposal kits will be available for pickup along with meals on June 25, 2020 during Yuma Community Food Bank’s normal meal pickup hours. And the additional grant of $5,000 from RALI will further support the Yuma Community Food Bank’s COVID-19 outreach efforts.
