A wrong-way driver was involved in a crash in Tempe on the Loop 202 Red Mountain early Friday morning.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety arrived onto the crash scene on the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway near Scottsdale Road shortly before 4 a.m.
It was reported that the wrong-way driver got onto the freeway at Sky Harbor and was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes. DPS troopers were working to stop the wrong-way driver when the suspect crashed head on into a vehicle near Scottsdale Road.
During the investigation, officers learned the wrong-way driver, identified only as a female in her 30’s, stated that she wanted to kill herself and a suicide note was found in her car.
The man whose vehicle was struck suffered serious injuries, but is expected to be ok. The wrong-way driver only suffered minor injuries. Both drivers were transported to the hospital for medical care.
The freeway was not closed, however two lanes were affected and the on-ramp was blocked off which has caused heavy delays in the morning rush hour. DPS is asking drivers to avoid the area and choose an alternative route.
