An extensive investigation conducted by Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) troopers and detectives has resulted in a prison sentence of over 22 years for Andrea R. Crespin, following a 2022 wrong-way collision that tragically claimed the life of her young daughter and left multiple victims with serious injuries.
On Monday, September 23, 2024, Crespin, 32, was sentenced to a total of 22 years and four months in prison, followed by 10 years of probation, after pleading guilty to manslaughter, aggravated assault, and driving under the influence. The sentence is in connection to a deadly crash on August 14, 2022, on Interstate 10 near Vail, Arizona.
The incident occurred when Crespin, under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration over three times the legal limit, was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-10. Her vehicle, a Mazda sedan, collided head-on with a Toyota sedan, also involving a Volkswagen in the crash. Crespin’s 2-year-old daughter, who was unrestrained in the front seat, died at the scene. Two adult passengers in the Toyota sustained serious injuries, while two children in the Toyota and the driver of the Volkswagen were unharmed.
The investigation revealed critical evidence, including blood alcohol tests, witness statements, and data retrieved from the Mazda, which led AZDPS detectives to charge Crespin with multiple felonies, including second-degree homicide, aggravated assault, and endangerment. In July 2023, Crespin was arrested at her apartment in Chandler by the AZDPS Southern Major Crimes Unit and held on a $500,000 bond.
After a lengthy legal process, Crespin pled guilty to manslaughter, aggravated assault, and DUI, resulting in the sentencing: 12 years for manslaughter, 10 years for aggravated assault, and four months for DUI, with each sentence to be served consecutively.
The AZDPS emphasizes the importance of this sentence in delivering justice to the families affected by Crespin’s reckless actions. The department remains committed to holding individuals accountable for endangering public safety and hopes this sentence offers some closure to the victims and their loved ones.
“Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we hope this outcome provides a sense of peace,” AZDPS said in a statement.
