PHOENIX — A devastating wrong-way crash early Saturday morning on US-93 in northern Arizona left five people dead, including a child, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The multi-vehicle collision happened around 2:17 a.m. near White Hills, when a Jeep station wagon traveling northbound in the southbound lanes struck a Hyundai station wagon head-on. Both vehicles erupted in flames on impact.
DPS said the Hyundai was carrying a man, a woman, and a child, while the Jeep had two men inside. All five individuals died at the scene as a result of the fire and blunt force trauma.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash and said impairment is being considered as a possible contributing factor.
US-93 is a frequently traveled highway connecting Phoenix and Las Vegas. The incident remains under investigation.
