PHOENIX, Ariz. — A woman who allegedly shot and killed her boyfriend in the early morning hours Monday has been released from custody while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the fatal encounter.
The Phoenix Police Department identified the victim as 46-year-old Tony Garcia. Officers were called to a home near 23rd Avenue and Butler Drive around 1:30 a.m. in response to a reported shooting.
Upon arrival, police found Garcia with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital by fire personnel, but he later died from his injuries.
A woman at the scene, who told officers she was Garcia’s girlfriend, was taken into custody for questioning. Detectives later determined that an assault occurred before the shooting took place.
Following a review in coordination with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, the woman was released while the investigation continues.
No charges have been filed at this time, and authorities have not released her name. The case remains open as officials gather additional evidence.
