A major winter system known as Winter Storm Fern has brought travel to a standstill across much of the United States, with Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport among the latest to feel the impact. Since early Saturday, 142 flights have been canceled and 82 delayed, according to airport officials.
The storm’s reach is vast—stretching across more than 34 states and affecting hundreds of millions of Americans. Forecasters warn that Fern’s mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain could make this one of the most disruptive winter events of the season.
Among the affected carriers are Southwest, Delta, United, and American Airlines, which have canceled or postponed multiple routes to major cities including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Dallas-Fort Worth. Four American Airlines flights originally scheduled for Saturday evening are now expected to depart between Saturday night and Sunday, bound for Charlotte, Los Cabos, New Orleans, and Dallas.
The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center has issued warnings for “catastrophic” ice accumulation that could cause widespread power outages and significant tree damage through Monday.
Travelers heading to or from Phoenix this weekend are encouraged to check Sky Harbor’s official website for real-time flight updates and delay information before heading to the airport.
