What You Need To Know For Netflix’s New Guide To Eliminate Password Sharing

Netflix has released their plan to crackdown on password sharing.

The company’s goal to get the subscriber growth back on track. The days of sharing your account password to friends and family will soon be coming to an end. While Netflix has not yet to release a date on which the guidelines will go into effect, here is what you need to know.

Who is allowed to use your Netflix account currently?

According to Netflix’s website, accounts are for “people who live together in a single household.” Any family members that live at a separate residence will not be able to use your account any longer.

To verify accounts within the same household, Netflix said they will use IP addresses, device IDs and account activity from devices already signed into the Netflix account.

How to verify a device?

When an account outside of the household regularly logs into your account on a Wi-Fi other than your main one, you will be asked to verify the account.

There are five steps you’ll need to take for the verification process:

  1. Netflix sends a link to the email address or phone number connected to the primary account owner.
  1. The link will open a page providing a 4-digit verification code.
  2. That code will need to be entered on the device within 15 minutes.
  3. If the code expired, you will need to request a new verification code.
  4. Once finalized, that device will be allowed to watch Netflix.

Does Netflix limit the number how people who can use your account?

The number of people who are allowed to use your account will be dependent on your Netflix plan.

Basic Plan
Allows for one user to watch on a device

Standard Plan
Allows for two

Premium Plan
Previously allowed four, new change will now allow six

How does traveling impact access to your Netflix account?

If you are the primary account owner or live at the same residence, there should be no need to verify your account while traveling.

Bringing new features to Netflix’s Premium plan

This week Netflix also announced new features at no additional cost for members who are already on the Premium plan, choose to upgrade, or are signing up for the first time.

Netflix Spatial Audio

Netflix’s Premium plan already offers the highest quality viewing experience, with beautiful, crisp, 4K HDR video resolution without ads, the ability to watch and download series and films  on four supported devices at a time, and more. Now, with Netflix spatial audio, members with Premium will enjoy the highest quality sound experience available, whether they are watching at home on TV or a computer, or on the go with a phone or tablet.

Netflix spatial audio brings an immersive, cinematic sound experience on any device with no additional equipment required — and now it’s available on more than 700 of their top watched titles, including Stranger Things, The Watcher, Wednesday, and Knives Out: Glass Onion.

More Download Devices

With people more connected than ever through multiple devices, Netflix learned through research that members would like the option to download Netflix series and films  to watch offline on more devices, particularly as they travel and switch between devices. They are increasing the number of download devices from four to six for premium members, so you can watch Netflix on your devices — anytime, anywhere.
