Phoenix riders will no longer be able to book Waymo robotaxis through the Uber app after the companies ended their autonomous vehicle partnership in the Valley, bringing to a close a pilot program that helped shape the next phase of robotaxi service in the United States.
Waymo and Uber confirmed the partnership ended in May after operating in Phoenix for roughly three years. The collaboration, announced in 2023, allowed a limited number of Waymo’s autonomous Jaguar I-PACE vehicles to provide rides and food deliveries through the Uber and Uber Eats platforms.
The Phoenix program served as the companies’ first joint test market and involved just over a dozen autonomous vehicles. The pilot allowed both companies to evaluate how autonomous vehicles could be integrated into Uber’s ride-hailing platform before expanding the model to larger deployments elsewhere.
While the partnership has ended in Arizona, Waymo vehicles remain available through the Uber app in Austin and Atlanta, where the companies have expanded operations with hundreds of autonomous vehicles. Waymo also continues to operate its own ride-hailing service in the Phoenix metropolitan area, where the company has maintained one of the nation’s largest commercial autonomous vehicle networks.
The move reflects the evolving autonomous vehicle market, with companies refining their business strategies as Arizona continues to serve as a key testing and deployment hub for self-driving technology.
