Self-driving technology pioneer Waymo is expanding its presence in metro Phoenix through a new partnership with DoorDash, aiming to make food and grocery delivery faster, safer, and more futuristic. Announced Thursday, the collaboration will allow DoorDash customers to choose autonomous vehicle delivery when placing orders from participating merchants across a 315-square-mile area that includes Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, and Chandler.
Once assigned to a self-driving Waymo vehicle, customers can unlock the trunk directly from their DoorDash app to pick up their order—no driver required. The move marks another milestone in Waymo’s ongoing effort to make autonomous mobility part of everyday life.
“We’re excited to make everyday errands easier with the Waymo Driver, offering the added peace of mind that comes with our safe and reliable technology,” said Nicole Gavel, Waymo’s head of business development and strategic partnerships.
Deliveries will begin with DashMart, DoorDash’s convenience and grocery platform, before gradually expanding to additional merchants across the Valley. The companies are also introducing special promotions for DashPass members, tying the new delivery feature to Waymo’s existing rideshare service.
“DashPass is designed to provide value and convenience, and this partnership builds on that promise,” said David Richter, DoorDash’s vice president of business and corporate development. “Together, we’re offering members a new and delightful experience while advancing our shared vision for an autonomous future of local commerce.”
Waymo, which originated as Google’s self-driving car project, has been a fixture in the East Valley since 2017 and launched fully driverless public rides in 2020. The company’s robotaxis became available across the Phoenix metro area in 2023 and have since expanded services to include airport rides and other autonomous transport options.
