Warning – Arizona Monsoons To Bring Mosquitos

Due to recent monsoons in Arizona, mosquitos will be rampant and breeding rapidly.

According to Johnny Dilone of the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department, the significant rain and water in the area, along with the warmer temperatures, provide the perfect breeding conditions for mosquitos.

Mosquito eggs take about three to four days to hatch in stagnant water. Therefore, Dilone said it is imperative to check for standing water in potted plants, pet water bowls, and any buckets you may have on your property.

Maricopa County Environmental Services Department has set up 800 mosquito traps in problematic areas across the county. In addition to setting up traps, the department is also testing the mosquitos for West Nile Virus and St. Louis Encephaltis.

None of the mosquitos that have been tested have tested positive for Zika virus, but the Zika virus has been diagnosed in Arizona from mosquitos in other areas of the world. Dilone said that the Zika virus symptoms mimic flu symptoms and that medical attention should be sought immediately.

Dilone encourages people to wear mosquito repellant and long-sleeved shirts and pants. Any issues can be reported to Maricopa County Environmental Services Department.
