Valley Metro Looking For Artists for Light Rail Extension Artwork

In an effort to enhance the metro experience, Valley Metro Rail is seeking artists to create public art to showcase at each station and select facilities.

From the beginning of the light rail system in 2008, art has been an important aspect of its success. In order to maintain its commitment to art, Valley Metro is providing an excellent opportunity for local and established artists to connect with local residents through their art expression.

According to Valley Metro spokeswoman Corinne Holliday, this is an opportunity for artist to partner with the community, project design team and the construction contractor to highlight the diverse history and culture of the south Phoenix area.

Scheduled for completion in 2023, selected artists will be given the task of creating artwork that will be displayed along the South Central light rail extension, connecting the already existing light rail system in downtown Phoenix.

On Monday, July 17th, Valley Metro staff will be holding a workshop at the Luna Culture Lab in Phoenix for artists who are thinking about applying to the project. The staff will be available to help with the submission process and answer any questions that may arise.

The Stakeholder Art Review Committee will be responsible for selecting the artists to work on the project. The committee, which consists of those who live and work near the South Central light rail extension, will also be providing input as the art is being developed.

The deadline to submit an art proposal is Wednesday, July 19th, and more information can be found at the South Central project page
