Valley Bike Share Program Launches in Tempe

Residents of the valley looking for alternatives to traditional ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft now have the option for a new regional bicycle share program. The Grid Bike Share Program, already in Phoenix and Mesa, has extended its services to Tempe.

The bicycle sharing app is good for those who want to get a bit of exercise while also enjoying the beautiful Arizona scenery. A spokeswoman for Tempe’s transportation department said it’s easy for users to download the app and take the “bright green bikes with baskets and bells” for a ride.

“GRID is going to be a fun, healthy and affordable way to extend the reach of our transit system for residents, commuters and visitors,” City of Phoenix Mayor Stanton said. “If our region is going to compete globally, we need GRID to help attract those high-wage employers and bright, educated young workers who want livable cities and multiple transit options.”

Approximately 50 other U.S. metro areas will have similar programs in place by next year. Users are able to reserve a bicycle online or at the bike itself with a keypad. They are given a 4-digit pin code, which unlocks the bike and allows you to take it out on the town. In Tempe, riders can pick up one of 300 bicycles located at 30 different stations around the city, and can conveniently return to any station in Tempe, Phoenix, or Mesa.

For an hourly rate of $7, or more frequent users can purchase weekly or monthly subscriptions, you can have the convenience of your own bicycle to get around town while also being environmentally conscious. Students attending Arizona State University are offered a special rate of $25 for six months, a bargain considering all the extra expenses associated with college and the often unreliable transportation services at universities.
