Tempe police have arrested two men accused of taking part in an attempted robbery that led to a shooting near Tempe Town Lake late Friday night.
Authorities identified the suspects as 18-year-old Sergio Rodriguez Avila and 20-year-old Rafael Rodriguez Avila. Both face charges of aggravated assault and aggravated robbery, the Tempe Police Department said Monday.
The shooting occurred around 11:40 p.m. near Rio Salado Parkway and Hardy Drive, where two people were riding scooters on the south side of the lake. Police said a group of individuals—including the two suspects—approached the riders and tried to rob one at gunpoint.
During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged between one of the scooter riders and a suspect, according to investigators. The group fled before officers arrived but was later located and taken into custody.
Police said one of the scooter riders and two suspects were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation remains ongoing.
