GILBERT, Ariz. — A Tucson man was killed late Sunday night after being struck by multiple vehicles on the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Gilbert, authorities said.
The incident began around 11 p.m. when a rollover crash occurred on the eastbound lanes between Lindsay and Gilbert roads, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Following the collision, one of the drivers involved — later identified as 40-year-old Adan Juan Martinez of Tucson — exited his vehicle and entered the westbound lanes of the freeway. He was hit first by a van and then by other vehicles, DPS reported.
Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Freeway closures and investigation
The westbound lanes of the Loop 202 were shut down for several hours overnight as investigators worked the scene. Traffic was reopened in time for the Monday morning commute.
The DPS Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the investigation, with support from the Tucson Police Department, Gilbert Police Department, and the Arizona Department of Transportation.
No additional information about the crash or circumstances leading to Martinez leaving his vehicle has been released.
