PHOENIX — A major reconstruction project for Interstate 10 in Tucson is set to begin in 2025, targeting one of Arizona’s busiest freeways with significant upgrades to improve traffic flow and accessibility, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced.
The initial phase focuses on a four-mile stretch between Ina and Ruthrauff roads, with plans to reconstruct interchanges at Orange Grove and Sunset roads. Enhancements include expanded entrance and exit ramps and additional lanes, transforming the I-10 into a four-lane freeway in both directions.
ADOT estimates the $171 million project will wrap up by mid-2025, coinciding with the opening of the new Sunset Road interchange. The interchange will feature a bridge allowing drivers to bypass railroad tracks near the Rillito River and connect directly to River Road, alleviating congestion.

A second phase will address the I-10 segment between Kino Parkway and Country Club Road, expanding it from two to three lanes in some areas and up to four lanes west of Kino Parkway. The Alvernon Way exit ramp, connecting with the Kino Sports Complex, will also undergo remodeling to better accommodate traffic.
This $600 million phase is scheduled to begin mid-2025 and finish by 2028. During construction, three lanes of traffic will remain open during the day, with businesses in the area remaining accessible.
